Our Home, Louisiana

Mission
To improve the health and welfare of Louisianians by providing health information, resources and other services related to the wellbeing of all Louisianians.

Why Our Home, Louisiana
After the largest natural disasters our state had ever seen, hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana recognized that we, as a state, are all in this together.  The strength of our state depends on the strength of our individual communities and residents, from the pine-filled forests of the north to the marsh swamps of the south.  Louisiana’s people are resilient and Blue Cross captured that sentiment in a message of unity and hope, Our Home, Louisiana.

In April 2010, the explosion of a BP oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico and the resulting oil leak radically affected the environment, the wildlife, and the physical and economic health of thousands of Louisianians and those in neighboring Gulf Coast states.  As the oldest and largest healthcare provider in the state, Blue Cross was ready and willing to commit resources and expertise to help in its key areas of expertise. Blue Cross took a leadership role in providing health education and related services to customers, friends and neighbors who had been devastated by the disaster. The company reached out to other organizations to form the Our Home, Louisiana Coalition.  The Coalition provided outreach services at 12 Coastal Care Fairs over the summer of 2010.

Today, Our Home, Louisiana is a resource for communities throughout the state to utilize in improving the health status of their residents.  While the BCBSLA Foundation has been doing this work for many years, it is now time to kick it up a notch.
